Overview
Dan R. Montgomery served as Thurston County’s elected Sheriff from 1979 to 1986. Earlier in his career he worked as a Traffic Officer with the California Highway Patrol and as a Deputy Sheriff in Yuba County, California during the 1960s and 1970s. Sheriff Montgomery died in January 2005. In 2003 his family created the Dan R. Montgomery Scholarship Fund to support young men and women pursuing postsecondary education.

The Next Step Scholarship was created to support students who intend to enter a trade, vocational occupation, or a career-focused program. Typical examples (not exhaustive) include dental hygienist, construction, truck driving, cosmetology/barbering, nursing, legal secretary, culinary arts, and information technology. Programs leading to physician, architect, veterinarian, attorney, or CPA careers are not eligible for this award.
Who is eligible
- Graduating seniors from public high schools located in Thurston, Mason, or Lewis counties, or from Raymond in Pacific County.
