Advantages of Participating in the HPSP Program

  • The HPSP scholarship also covers the cost of books and most other educational expenses.
  • Participants receive an annual salary of approximately $35,000, which includes:
  • A monthly stipend of $2,870.00 for 10 ½ months
  • Second Lieutenant military and travel pay for the remaining 45 days during their active duty tour.
  • A $20,000 signing bonus is available for students who secure a four-year AF HPSP scholarship, similar to the Army and Navy program. Those who receive a three-year scholarship can also get the signing bonus if they commit to a four-year term.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must be accepted or currently enrolled in a medical school accredited by either the Association of American Medical Colleges (MD schools) or American Osteopathic Association (DO schools) located within the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico.
  • Only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates must meet the physical qualifications for commissioning as an Air Force officer.

Application Timeline

  • For those seeking four-year scholarships, it's advisable to apply in the early fall of the year before starting medical school.
  • Medical students interested in three-year scholarships should apply as soon as possible.
  • Since scholarships are granted on a rolling basis, applying early increases the chances of selection.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Candidates must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and a minimum MCAT score of 500, with at least 124 in each of the MCAT subsections.
  • Three and four-year scholarship applicants with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.4 and a total MCAT score of 504 (with a minimum subsection score of 124 in each subsection) are automatically selected and do not need to meet a scheduled accession board.
