NJ ASSP Scholarship Program
Scholarship Sponsored by American Society of Safety Professionals
Intro
If you have a college student in your immediate or extended family—such as a son, daughter, niece, nephew, or grandchild—or know a New Jersey student pursuing Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) studies, you may be able to nominate them for one of two NJ ASSP Chapter scholarships. Both awards are $1,000 each and are granted twice yearly. See the specific eligibility and application details below.
General requirements (applies to both scholarships)
- All applicants must submit a completed application form, an official/current transcript, and one reference letter from either a high school teacher, a university professor/department head, or a current work supervisor.
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Evaluation will also consider leadership in extracurriculars, participation in professional organizations, written communication in the application, and academic awards/honors.

Ted Brickley & Bernice Shikora Scholarship
Overview
- Award amount: $1,000.
- Frequency: awarded twice per year (see application periods below).
- Students may apply in each application period.
Eligibility
- Must be enrolled at an accredited university in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related EHS major.
- Open to full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students.
- Must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours in environmental- or safety-related coursework.
- Overall GPA of at least 2.5 (4.0 scale).
- GPA in environmental/safety courses of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale).
- Applicant must be a New Jersey resident or attend college in New Jersey.
Application requirements
- Application periods:
- Period 1: September 1 – November 15 (award announced at the December meeting)
- Period 2: January 1 – April 15 (award announced at the May meeting)
- Complete applications must be submitted within one of the above periods; late submissions will not be accepted and must be re-applied in the next period.
- A complete submission includes:
- Completed application form
- Copy of current transcript
- Short biography describing interests, hobbies, and/or work history, or a current résumé
- Reference letter to the Chapter from the relative who is an Active NJ ASSP Member
- Reference letter from a high school teacher, university department head, or professor
Judging criteria
The committee will weigh:
- GPA as shown on the transcript
- Leadership demonstrated through extracurricular activities
- Level of involvement in safety/hygiene or related activities
- Participation in professional environmental or safety organizations
- Written communication quality in the application materials
- Awards and honors from educational institutions
- Any prior awards received from the NJ Chapter

Joyce Cunningham Scholarship
Overview
- Award amount: $1,000.
- Frequency: awarded twice per year (see application periods below).
- Students may apply during each application period.
Eligibility
- Open to students in any field of study at an accredited university.
- Eligible applicants include high school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited university, as well as full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate students.
- Applicant must be the son/daughter, niece/nephew, or grandchild of an active, in-good-standing member of the NJ ASSP Chapter.
- Minimum GPA: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Application requirements
- Application periods:
- Period 1: September 1 – November 15 (award announced at the December meeting)
- Period 2: January 1 – April 15 (award announced at the May meeting)
- Applications must be received within one of the periods above; late submissions will not be accepted.

- Reference letter to the Chapter from the relative who is an Active NJ ASSP Member

- GPA as shown on the transcript
- Demonstrated leadership through extracurricular activities
- Involvement in professional organizations or charitable activities
- Quality of written communication in the application
- Awards and honors received at educational institutions
- Degree of involvement in the NJ Chapter by the ASSP Member relative
- Any previous awards received from the NJ Chapter
