Robert A. McNew Law Student Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Federal Bar Association
The Robert A. McNew Law Student Scholarship is an annual initiative aimed at encouraging the study of federal law. Each year, a minimum of one scholarship worth $5,000 is awarded to a law student enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school. The student must either be a Federal Bar Association (FBA) student associate member or have a keen interest in federal practice.
This scholarship is named in tribute to Robert A. McNew, the former president of the Foundation of the Federal Bar Association and the founder of the Fellows program. McNew, who also held the position of FBA president, was an active FBA member for over three decades. He continued to support the Foundation even after his retirement until his demise in 2023.
Applicants are required to demonstrate high character and professionalism in both their personal and professional lives, as evidenced by the following application materials:
- An online application form
- A personal essay
- An unedited academic transcript (either official or student copy)
- Two recommendation letters (which can be from professors)
Recommendation letters can be included with the online application or sent directly by the recommender to foundation@fedbar.org. Please ensure your name and 'McNew Scholarship' are included in the email subject line (for example, 'B Smith McNew Scholarship'). The selection of the scholarship recipient is based on the student's involvement in the FBA, law school, community activities, and academic performance.
All scholarship applications and necessary documents must be submitted by November 1 each year.
