Admiral James B. Osborn Memorial Scholarship
Overview
This scholarship honors Rear Admiral James B. Osborn and is supported by Charleston Base Submarine Veterans, Inc. Admiral Osborn was chosen to command the U.S. Navy’s first ballistic-missile-capable submarine, the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (SSBN 598). Two years later—July 1960—that vessel made history by firing the first POLARIS missile from beneath the ocean’s surface off Cape Canaveral.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be a high school senior.
- Applicant must have a family relationship with a submarine-qualified individual who is a member of United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.
- Applicant must provide proof of acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution (2-year or 4-year).
- Applicant must demonstrate academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities that benefit their school or local community.
Award
The scholarship is paid as a single disbursement of at least $1,000 to the recipient.
