New Mexico Horse Council Foundation Scholarship

Overview
The New Mexico Horse Council (NMHC) Foundation awards a scholarship to a graduating high school senior from New Mexico who has been accepted to and enrolls in a post‑secondary educational program. Scholarship payments are made directly to the recipient’s college, university, or vocational school after the Foundation receives verification of the student’s enrollment.
Who may apply
- Open only to graduating high school seniors who reside in and attend school in New Mexico.
How recipients are chosen
Selection considers multiple factors, including:
- Academic achievement
- Personal character and initiative
- Contributions to the horse community
- Demonstrated commitment to horses and to helping others
- Leadership and/or involvement with horses that produced benefits for others beyond personal gain
- Written communication skills
A sample evaluation rubric is available from the NMHC Foundation upon request.
Required application materials
Applicants must submit all of the following:
- Two letters of recommendation (recommendations from family members are not accepted):
- One letter from a teacher or other school official
- One letter from an adult horseperson active in the New Mexico horse community
- A certified copy of your high school transcript
- A written statement outlining your academic accomplishments
- A written statement describing your community involvement with examples of leadership
- One essay (200–300 words) addressing how your participation in the horse community has benefited you and shaped your educational and life goals
Award administration
The scholarship winner must provide their student identification number and official proof of enrollment at the post‑secondary institution before the Foundation will release payment to that school.
